What is a Prosthodontist?

A prosthodontist is a dentist who specializes in the diagnosis, restoration, and maintenance of teeth.

This includes teeth function, appearance, health, and replacement.

A prosthodontist must attend an additional three years of education after dental school and pass an examination by the Royal College of Dentists of Canada.

What are the Benefits of Prosthodontic Treatments?

Prosthodontic treatments are advanced restorative and rehabilitative treatment options that can help restore the function and aesthetics of your teeth.

A prosthodontist can provide a range of treatments to patients, including:

Tooth Crown

A tooth crown is a dental prosthetic that restores a tooth back to its normal shape and size.

When a tooth is cracked or decayed, a prosthodontist can cement a crown permanently to restore a tooth’s strength and health.

Bridges

A dental bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth.

A bridge uses two or more crowns, called abutment teeth, to anchor a false tooth or teeth along a gap of missing teeth.

Dental Veneers

A veneer is a coating of material, usually made of porcelain, to repair and protect teeth.

Veneer bonds to tooth enamel and can be used to repair chips, stains, gaps or misshaped teeth.

Dentures

Dentures are a partial or full set of false teeth.

They are made to fit a patient’s mouth and help with function for chewing, talking, and aesthetically.

Dentures come in a few different variants and can usually be removed and cleaned regularly.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are used as replacement tooth roots.

A dental implant can be used to permanently affix a fake tooth or dental bridge onto a patient’s gums.

Occlusal Guards

Occlusal guards, also called night guards, protect teeth from clenching and grinding while a patient sleeps.

They’re similar to mouth guards used in sports, but are made from thin, smooth plastic and made specifically for the patient’s mouth.

Meet Our Prosthodontist

Originally from Edmonton, Dr. Morgan Gwin obtained a degree in Mechanical Engineering before completing the DDS program at the University of Alberta in 2015.  She spent three years in private practice in the Edmonton area before returning to graduate school at the University of Washington to specialize in Prosthodontics.

The field of Prosthodontics deals with the replacement of missing teeth and oral tissues with the goal of restoring oral form and function so that patients can comfortably and confidently speak, chew, laugh and smile.  Prosthodontists have advanced training in smile esthetics, restorative dentistry, dental implants, full arch prostheses (patients may know these as “All on 4” or “fixed complete dentures”), and removable prosthetics (complete and partial dentures). She provides a range of treatments, from the restoration of single teeth to complex, full-mouth rehabilitations that involve teeth, implants, or a combination of both.

When is it Time to See a Prosthodontic Specialist?

Losing teeth is more common than some people realize in Canada.

According to a study published by the National Center for Biotechnology and Information (NCBI), 10% of Canadians lose a tooth each year.

Patients should understand they have many options available when it comes to how their smiles look and don’t have to live with missing teeth.

You will want to see a prosthodontist if you:

  • Have worn or damaged teeth
  • Are unsatisfied with the appearance and function of your teeth
  • Are missing one or more teeth
  • Are interested in dental implants
  • Wear dentures or removable partial dentures
  • Want to optimize the aesthetics of your smile.

Losing a tooth requires the help of a certified professional.

Our prosthodontist in Airdrie can restore lost oral function, repair damaged, or replace missing teeth, and use multidisciplinary techniques to make a patient’s smile look natural and healthy.

If you are unsatisfied with your teeth, contacting our prosthodontist for information about your options is a valuable first step.

As a full-service clinic, we are able to provide specialist-level care to your Prosthodontic Dental therapies.

Our prosthodontist will work with your general dentist here at Sierra while incorporating with our periodontist and orthodontist if needed during your treatment process.

This team approach can optimize treatment outcomes and ensure the continuation of care for your long-term dental health.

We are happy to answer your important questions and look forward to hearing from you.
