What is Implant Retained Denture?
An implant-supported denture is a special type of denture that is anchored into place by dental implants.
When you lose your natural teeth, all that is left are the bony ridges which used to hold the teeth.
Traditional dentures have to rest on these ridges.
The shrinking of these ridges is known as resorption. Resorption is an inevitable process that begins when permanent teeth are lost.
Without the stability of the tooth roots, resorption can continue until there is very little bone left, implants help slow this process.
Unfortunately, this is one of the main reasons why people have difficulty wearing traditional dentures and look to implant retained dentures as an option.
An implant-supported denture can only be used when a person has enough bone left in the jaw to support the implants.
Implant-supported dentures are most frequently made for the lower jaw because regular dentures tend to be less stable on the bottom arch.
However, implant-supported dentures can be placed in the upper or lower jaw depending on the patient’s individual needs.
Please see our implant page for more information on this process.
Our Implant Retained Dentures Procedure
Just like traditional dentures, you should remove an implant-supported denture every evening to clean the denture and gum area.
Some people prefer to have fixed dentistry such as bridgework in their mouths so that it cannot be removed.
Make an appointment today to speak with a Sierra dentist to discuss your particular needs and preferences for comfortable, long-lasting treatment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Especially after first being fitted for dentures, and with lower dentures, which come loose easier, focus on eating food that is soft and easy to chew. Here are some examples of denture-friendly foods:
- Cooked Vegetables
- Pasta
- Eggs
- Porridge
- Smoothies
If you are unsure about any foods or are having trouble eating with dentures, it’s best to contact your dentist with any questions. If eating with dentures proves to be too difficult, there are other options such as dental implants or denture adhesives.
