What to expect from a dental implant procedure at Sierra
A dental implant is essentially an artificial tooth root, integrated into the jawbone. They are strong, comfortable and invisible once they are in place. Implants can be used to replace missing teeth or as anchors to provide stability for dentures, bridges, and crowns. They are fabricated from titanium, a strong, lightweight, biocompatible metal. It is the material of choice for dental implants as well as artificial joints, such as hip and knee replacements. We choose titanium because it has the ability to fuse with your bone very naturally. This process, called osseointegration, is the reason for the high success rate for both joint replacements and dental implants.
The doctor will conduct a comprehensive examination to see if you are a good candidate for a dental implant procedure in Calgary. Some conditions may interfere with the process of the implant integrating with the bone. If you have periodontal disease, cancer, radiation to the jawbone, uncontrolled diabetes, smoking, or alcoholism, an implant may not be recommended. It is important to inform the doctor about all medical conditions as well as all prescription and over-the-counter medications you may be taking.
Implant surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis, and local anaesthesia is usually all that is required. However, Dr Murray Knebel and his team offer sedation such as nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral sedation, and IV sedation, if required for patient comfort. If additional procedures such as gingival grafts or bone augmentation are required, they may be performed at the same time or in separate procedures, each patient and situation is different and we will work with you to create your best treatment plan.
After you are comfortably numbed, the implant is gently placed into the bone. This is followed by a healing period of two to six months. During this time, the body is integrating with the implant. It fuses to the bone, becoming stronger and more stable as it heals. Once osseointegration is complete, you will return to Sierra so we can cement a beautiful dental crown on top to complete your new tooth. In the case of dentures, your removable overdenture will be snapped in place.
Proper oral hygiene is required for the continued success of your implants. Just as with any surgery, there is a risk of infection, inflammation or even bone loss (a condition called peri-implantitis) if not cared for properly. Sierra staff are exceptional at supporting you in this process. Maintaining regular hygiene and dental check-ups will ensure the health of your bone and gums long term.
