The discoloration of the teeth can happen easily, and over short periods of time you may notice a difference in the colour of your teeth. Bad habits and certain foods can quickly cause your teeth to appear yellow or darker in color.

Foods Causing Teeth Discolouration

While bad habits might be difficult to break, you can avoid foods that cause for discolouration.

By avoiding certain foods, trying to break bad habits, and performing daily dental care, your teeth will remain lighter. Discoloured teeth can be embarrassing and make you feel uncomfortable smiling. By simply keeping certain foods out of your diet, you can avoid further staining.

  1. Coffee, especially black coffee is horrible for the colour of your teeth. Coffee can quickly turn pearly whites into an unattractive shade of yellow.
  2. Red wine will show almost immediate results. Stains will appear after a single glass, and after continuous consumption can affect the permanent colour of your teeth.
  3. Tea, just like coffee, can be very bad for the colour of your teeth. By adding milk in your tea, you can slow the process of staining.
  4. Blueberries might be a healthy sweet snack, but the skin on the blueberries will cause the teeth to become discoloured.
  5. The potency of beets will quickly stain teeth, especially beet juice.
  6. Soy sauce sticks to the teeth, allowing its dark colour pigments to stain them.
  7. Energy and sports drinks are high in acid and will stain your teeth with regular consumption.
  8. Carbonated beverages, such as soda contain high levels of acid and chromogens. The higher levels will cause teeth to stain.
  9. Candy and other sweets that are high in sugar content and artificial coloring agents will stain the teeth. This includes popsicles, gum, hard candy, and other miscellaneous sweet treats.
  10. Tomato sauces are highly acidic and also cause staining.

While there are a lot of foods and beverages that can cause your teeth to stain, proper hygiene practices will help reduce any staining. Routine dental appointments and whitening treatments will also help. However, it is important that flossing, brushing and the use of mouthwash are all being addressed at home.

While bad habits including smoking and drinking are also key factors in teeth staining, by reducing the consumption of foods that cause stains, your teeth can still remain lighter in colour.

Contact your dentist if the discolouration of your teeth is something that bothers you. They will offer several solutions to help you lighten the current shade and to remove the staining!
