Invisalign braces are a great option for those who want a straight smile without noticeable, and often uncomfortable, traditional braces. Unlike traditional braces, which are fitted with metal brackets, Invisalign braces straighten your teeth using custom-fitted, clear plastic aligner trays. These trays are updated every couple of weeks in order to gently move your teeth into place. You can achieve great results while avoiding the discomforts of having wires tightened and metal in your mouth!

Things To Know Before You Get Invisalign

Depending on your bite and what you want to achieve, Invisalign may be the right option for you. However, there are some things to know before getting Invisalign. Here are a few things to keep in mind and ask your dentist about.

  1. Aligners Are Removable
But they must be worn for at least 22 hours every day in order to achieve good results. Invisalign braces should only be removed to eat meals, drink things other than flat water, and clean your teeth. For the results you want, aligner trays must be worn for a minimum of 22 hours every single day of the treatment.
  2. You Will Have to Take Extra Care of Your Teeth
Good dental hygiene is always important but becomes even more so while wearing Invisalign. You will need to clean your teeth thoroughly after each time you eat and before putting your aligners back in. Wearing the aligners with food stuck in your teeth can lead to plaque buildup, which in turn causes cavities and gum disease. You will have to get used to carrying a toothbrush and floss with you and make dental hygiene a bigger part of your routine.
  3. No Lipstick!
Since the aligners are clear plastic, lipstick, lip stain, and coloured lip gloss will stain them. This is something to consider if you’re used to wearing lip colour, as you will have to change this part of your makeup regime if you wear Invisalign.
  4. Stick to Water
Drinks like pop, juice, and alcoholic beverages are bad for your teeth and can also stain your aligners. Coloured, sugary, or acidic drinks should be avoided, and if they can’t be, teeth should be cleaned well before aligners are put back in. If you are drinking anything other than water, aligners should be taken out while consuming.
  5. You’ll Need a Retainer
After Invisalign treatment is complete, your dentist will fit you with a retainer that should be worn at night, every night, for life. This will keep your teeth from shifting and ensure the effects of your Invisalign treatment aren’t reversed.
