Common Dental Emergencies We Treat
Dental emergencies can be painful, stressful, and unpredictable. At Sierra Dental, our Calgary patients trust us to provide compassionate, evidence-based care with the goal of immediate relief and long-term oral health.
Here are some of the urgent dental issues we commonly treat and how our emergency dentist can help:
Toothaches can range from dull to intense, throbbing pain that can affect your ability to eat, sleep, or focus.
How We Help:
Our emergency dentist will first determine the cause of the pain, whether it is decay, infection, or maybe something foreign stuck between the teeth. Possible treatments may include:
- Debris removal with a floss or a dental scaler
- Dental filling or root canal therapy for decay and infection
- Tooth extraction for irreversible damage
A missing filling can lead to sensitivity, food impaction, and further tooth decay.
How We Help:
- Our dentist can restore the tooth using a new composite filling
- If deeper decay is present, root canal therapy or a crown may be recommended.
Cuts or bleeding in the lips, cheeks, gums, or tongue require attention, especially if bleeding persists.
How We Help:
Careful assessment is important to determine the severity of the injury.
- Minor ones usually resolve on their own with at-home care
- Deeper and larger wounds require sutures and follow-up care to ensure proper healing
Injuries to the teeth may result in minor chips or more serious fractures. Our emergency dental team will do an X-ray to understand the extent of the damage and determine the best way to save your tooth.
How We Help:
- Bonding or composite fillings for small chips and cracks.
- Fractures above the tooth pulp need the help of medications to prevent sensitivity before it is rebuilt with fillings.
- Root canal therapy and a crown for deeper cracks or pulp involvement.
- Tooth extraction if the tooth cannot be restored.
Time is critical when a tooth is completely knocked out; this will make all the difference between saving your tooth and losing it.
How We Help:
If you arrive within 60 minutes, our emergency dentist has a better chance of saving your tooth. The tooth will be cleaned, reimplanted, and allowed to heal with a splint. But if it cannot be saved, we will walk you through suitable replacement options to restore your smile.
A bent wire or loose bracket can cause discomfort and delay your treatment progress. You may place an orthodontic wax on the area to avoid injury to your gums. But a visit to our orthodontist should be done as soon as possible.
How We Help:
Poking wires can be trimmed and repositioned, while broken brackets can be reattached or replaced.
Damage to restorations can affect both function and appearance. Any exposed, fragile tooth may also break and cause further problems if the veneer or bridge is not replaced.
How We Help:
We assess and repair or replace damaged restorations quickly to protect your natural teeth and restore your ability to smile, chew, and speak confidently.
Falls, sports injuries, or accidents can cause loose teeth and complex jaw fractures. At Sierra Dental, we are home to experts in emergency and oral and maxillofacial care to provide you with a treatment plan for extensive trauma.
How We Help:
Treatment may include medications, surgical evaluation, and jaw and facial rehabilitation.

While it is not always possible to save the tooth, our emergency dentist will do their best to do so!
