Gum problems are perhaps the number one cause in tooth loss. The health of our gums is equally as important as the health of our teeth. Gum disease is a serious issue in which all of us should be more aware of. If we are aware of the causes of gum disease, we have more of a chance to prevent it from happening.

Avoiding Gum Disease

Gum disease occurs when bacteria effects the gums. When we don’t brush our teeth regularly, we allow food to accumulate and a film then covers the enamel of our teeth. While not all of the bacteria that grows is necessarily bad, bad bacteria is more likely to thrive under these circumstances, which is what leads to gum disease.

Gum disease is a serious issue that can cause horrible symptoms. This is why it is crucial that we try to avoid gum disease at all costs.

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day and especially before bed
  • Brush your teeth properly using the right motions and supplies
  • Floss your teeth regularly
  • Use a soft brush
  • Refrain from tobacco products
  • Lessen your stress levels
  • Refrain from grinding or clenching your teeth
  • Watch what medicines you are using. Some medicines raise the risk of gum disease

By paying mind to all of the things that are likely to cause gum disease and making sure that you are properly and efficiently caring for your teeth, you can lessen the risk of ever getting the disease.

While there are many ways of preventing it, many people still find themselves with a developing case of gum disease in Canada. Since plaque is the cause of the disease, the problem will be addressed by your dentist. They will remove the plaque and will clean all of the affected areas. They will perform a deep cleaning usually referred to as scaling and will provide you with information on how to care for the disease appropriately.

If gum disease is left untreated, tooth loss is a possibility. This unfortunate problem breaks down the gums and bone structure of the teeth, causing them to become loose and unsightly. Gum disease is also related to other heath diseases so it is crucial that you care for the problem accordingly.
