Denture Options in Signal Hill

Dentures come in several types depending on your oral health, treatment goals, and budget. From partial and complete dentures to implant-supported options, our team will evaluate your needs and goals so we can recommend the most suitable treatment for you.

Partial Dentures

  • If you are only missing a few teeth or have unwanted gaps in the mouth, partial dentures are an excellent solution. Our custom partial dentures are designed to fit comfortably and blend naturally with your smile. They are secured in place by your natural teeth so they do not shift around while you bite and chew.
  • Many of our patients prefer partial dentures because of their flexibility, affordability, and comfort. But, it is essential to have your bone tissue assessed to ensure it is in good shape to support partial dentures.

Complete Dentures

If you have lost all of your natural teeth, complete dentures are the perfect solution to bring not just your smile back, but also your ability to eat, speak, and live with confidence. This is also a great choice if you have experienced bone loss or periodontal problems.

At Sierra Dental, we work closely with our denturist and full mouth rehabilitation specialists to craft complete dentures that fit securely and comfortably so you can enjoy a healthy life to the fullest.

Implant-Supported Dentures

This is an alternative to traditional dentures that gives patients better stability and comfort in their dentures.

Unlike a traditional denture that rests on the gums, this type of denture relies on dental implants that are strategically placed across the jawbone. It mimics the natural tooth function for improved chewing and enhanced bone support. It also reduces sore spots for a more comfortable and long-lasting solution.

However, not everyone is a candidate for implant-supported dentures. It is always best to consult with one of our Calgary denturist so we can determine if this type of denture solution is right for you.

Step-by-Step Guide on Denture Fitting

When it comes to creating custom dentures, we combine expert clinical skills with advanced technology. We use digital intraoral cameras, digital impression scanning, 3D imaging, and CBCT scans for accurate diagnosis, precise impressions, and effective treatment planning.

If you are thinking about getting dentures, understanding the steps involved will help you know what to expect. A regular denture procedure usually includes:

1. Initial Consultation and Assessment

First, we examine the mouth, evaluate your oral health, and discuss your options to prepare you for the denture treatment.

2. Extractions and Temporary Dentures

In some cases, one may have their dentures fitted on the same day as extractions. Temporary dentures will be made until the primary dentures are ready so you never go without your smile.

3. Digital Impressions and Custom Fabrication

Using a digital impression scanner, we will capture photos of your mouth, no messy and uncomfortable putty needed. This will be sent to the lab where your custom dentures will be made.

4. Fitting and Adjustments

When the set of dentures is ready, they are fitted over your gums to ensure comfort and stability. They should not move around or be painful when you speak, bite, or chew. Minor adjustments can be made to support a smooth transition.

5. Aftercare Tips

Proper maintenance helps your dentures last longer. Before you leave the office, our denturist will discuss helpful tips to help you adjust to your new dentures and keep them in good shape. This includes tips on cleaning, diet, and hygiene care.

6. Ongoing Support

Your new dentures may take a while to feel completely comfortable. But, our team will provide continuous support with regular follow-ups to ensure lasting fit, function, and comfort. We are one call away if you have questions or need help along the way.

Frequently Asked Questions

A denturist is a licensed dental care provider who has undergone three years of specialized education and training to diagnose, design, fabricate, deliver, and monitor dentures. Our certified Calgary denturist, Roni Yusefov, works closely with our full dental team and specialists to help patients receive personalized care.

This has elevated our many patients’ denture experience and has created thousands of happy smiles.

A partial denture is a removable dental appliance that replaces one or more missing natural teeth. It is typically made out of a combination of acrylic resin and a metal base with clasps that wrap around existing, healthy teeth to hold the denture in place.

Sierra Dental offers various materials for partial dentures to suit your needs. We will discuss these options during the consultation

A full denture is a removable dental prosthesis that replaces all teeth in your upper or lower jaw. They are typically made with pink acrylic resin and porcelain material. They rest on the gums and stay in place using natural suction achieved with precise denture fitting.

Dentures at Sierra Dental are made using advanced techniques that create a secure, natural, and comfortable fit that feels and looks good.

When you have new dentures, especially lower dentures, they may feel less stable at first. It is best to start with soft, easy-to-chew foods. Our denture team recommends the following:

  • Cooked vegetables
  • Soft pasta
  • Eggs
  • Porridge or oatmeal
  • Smoothies

Yes, you can. It is actually recommended by our dentista that you sleep with your dentures on the first night so your gums can gradually adjust to them. It can also help you determine if further refinements are needed to improve comfort.

But, once you have adjusted to your new dentures, it is advisable to get into the habit of taking them out when you sleep. Soak them in a denture cleaner overnight to prevent build-up of stain and bacteria.

If you take your dentures out when you sleep, you should experience the following benefits:

  • Slows bone loss – Removing your dentures at night also removes the pressure on the gums and bone. This pressure can cause bone resorption, which can be slowed down if you let the gums rest at night.
  • Prevents bacteria build-up – Dentures can be a breeding ground for bacteria if it is not thoroughly cleaned. Taking your dentures out can help make time for proper cleaning, reducing the risk of dental problems caused by bacteria.
  • Keeps gums healthy – By taking your dentures out, you allow saliva to flow freely into the mouth, washing away bacteria that may cause infections such as denture stomatitis.

Our Calgary denture team highlights that, overall, taking your dentures out at night helps your dentures fit better for longer and supports long-term oral health.

The timing depends on the type of dentures and how quickly your mouth heals. Typically, custom-made dentures are placed 2 to 6 months after extraction. This time frame allows the gums and bone to heal, preventing any pain or discomfort that can occur if dentures are fitted too early.

In the meantime, our Calgary denturist can fit you with temporary dentures so you do not go without a smile. They may feel odd and uncomfortable at first, but they get the job done before your permanent dentures are fabricated.

For some patients, these “immediate dentures” are placed as soon as the teeth are extracted. While not advisable, they may be chosen as permanent dentures. However, they will need adjustments or relining as the gums and bone change shape while they continue to heal. New dentures may ultimately be necessary once healing is complete.

Sore spots may occur if the dentures are too tight, if there are sharp or unpolished areas on the dentures, or if you have bony areas that are not relieved during denture fitting. Soreness may also occur as the mouth adjusts to the new dentures

If this occurs, see your dentist or denturist at Sierra Dental. Adjustments can be made to relieve the discomfort and help your dentures fit more comfortably.

Usually, additional teeth can still be added to your existing partial denture. But, this still depends on the current condition of the denture. See your dentist or denturist about this.

If still in good, functional condition, repairing a broken denture can be done with minimal turnaround time.

On average, dentures can last 5 to 8 years. With good denture maintenance and proper hygiene care, you can expect your dentures to last even longer.

Even if you have no more natural teeth, it is still recommended to visit your dentist or denturist at least once a year. This is so that they can check the fit of the dentures and assess the gums for signs of irritation, inflammation, and other dental health issues.
